West End Beach has a large beach, play structures, and great views to the East across Donner Lake. It is about a 15 minute walk. In the summer, there are lifeguards, concessions, and an entrance fee (usually free in the winter).

This state park covers the entire East end of Donner Lake. There is a great museum with a film about the Donner party. There are hiking paths, beaches, and cross country/snow shoe routes are marked in the Winter (no grooming).

In the Winter, the lake level drops by 10 feet and the docks are out of the water. However, you can walk or hang out along the shoreline in Winter due to the low water level.
