The cheese cakes, especially the plain baked version. Wash it down with a strong pot of tea and go back to the Upper House for a nap. Perfect ;)

A small but select menu of breakfast and brunch dishes. Great croissants, love the balsamic-and-dukka-seasoned avocado and pancetta on toast, the frittata, and the delicate house-made cakes. Sit at the bench on the terrace and gaze at the beautiful wedding chapel across the street, and the distant valley.

A good spot for takeaway dinners if all you want to do is hole up at the Upper House but not cook. The steamed momos, biryani, orange and chilli caramelised pork belly, dahl soup (a thickish stew great for spooning over the biryani), and the chana paneer (chickpeas and paneer) are my staples. The takeaway menu is available at lumbini.com.au.

Good coffee, unusual cakes (think carrot cake cookies with cream cheese filling), fresh juices, and a made-to-order gutsy moreish pulled lamb wrap that I can't stop ordering every time. Take that lamb wrap on a picnic or bush walking, it's tightly wrapped and makes for neat eating. I usually can't wait that long, and gobble it up warm from the press.

This is where the locals hang out for breakfast, brunch and lunch on weekdays, and gets even more crowded on weekends when visitors hit the town. Having said that, I have never had to wait more than 5min for a table, someone is always just finishing up and leaving. Grab a table on the sidewalk and watch the Maleny world go by. Highlights: Campos coffee, some of the best crepes I've had outside of Paris, plain and delicious cakes (think warm pear and blueberry butter cake with a side of thick cream). My favourite brunch dishes are mushrooms and spinach on panfried polenta, and the eggs benedict.

Situated improbably amongst medical and dental centres, this boutique brewery is worth a visit. Opened by locals for locals, it features craft beer tasting and a small but select spirits menu (a special call out to the Ink gin and tonic with a squeeze of lemon). The food menu is divided into bar food, grazing plates and bigger bites. The salads are elaborate and enormous, and best shared. Open for lunch and dinner, and breakfast on weekends.

This is away from the buzz of Maleny's main street, but well worth the drive to seek it out. Excellent modern Asian-inspired menu (lunch and dinner) in lush sub-tropical native gardens. If you go during the day, factor in some time to take an easy stroll through the estate, just follow the meandering path. Having said that, dinner is why I go to The Tamarind though. It is one of the best dining experiences on the Range.

Essentials

Opens from 7am to 8pm daily. Well-maintained and clean coin-operated laundrette - $5 per wash, and $4 to $6 to dry. The machines take $1 and $2 coins. There is an on-site change dispenser that takes $5, $10, $20 or $50 note, and gives you change in one-dollar coins. There is also a detergent dispenser where you can purchase washing powder for one regular load. Each wash is about 30min, and it's perfectly ok to wander off and come back after an hour or so. Locals observe the courtesy of collecting their washing as soon as they can, especially on busy days.

This IGA rocks. In addition to the usual basics you'd expect in a supermarket, it is chocked full of interesting local and non-local products. Slow browsing is recommended if you love exploring grocery shelves. The IGA has a useful labelling system: blue labels with a cow are local products, pink labels mean gluten-free. Local products: Maleny milk (complimentary at the Upper House), Walker Farm eggs, Essential Grain breads, Woombye cheeses, Kenilworth cheeses and chocolate mousse, Maleny yoghurt, Crystal Waters honey, Saint Sausages in the chiller section (the rough-minced chicken chorizo is a personal fav), Peachester leg ham at the deli, Saya skincare range, Kin Kin dish washing detergent (bring a bottle home!), roast chicken (better than Woolworths'). Opens from 6.30am to 9pm every day. Shut on Christmas Day.

Bright, airy and colourful with textiles and tops from India. A cute selection of children's clothing. More upmarket boho than hippy. Worth a browse.

Parks & Nature

Visible from the Upper House, Lake Baroon is a winding 10min drive away, located at the end of North Maleny Road. The Maleny side of the lake is usually quiet and frequented by locals. A beautiful, peaceful spot to just BE. Grab some lunch from town, bring a book and rug, and allow yourself to settle down with the water, trees, hills and light. Magical even on a rainy day. Gates at the lake close at 6pm.
