Go early! There is so much to see and do. Hike the crater rim, check out the visitor’s center, visit the lava tubes, and take a lot of pictures!!!

Punalu’u is the closest beach to Volcano. Not your typical white, sandy Hawai’i beach, It’s something quite unique and beautiful.

Really unique green sands bay. You can hike out on foot or hop in the back of the truck ($20) and support local folks. This isn't a quick and easy spot so give yourself some time (a few hours) to get back to your vehicle before dark. And as always with any tourist destination, don't leave any valuables in your car.

One of my favorite little spots. Take some time and do a tasting. They have some very different wines. Try the macadamia honey Meade for something a little different. And tell them Gigi sent ya!

One of our favorite spots for dining and craft cocktails. When the crater is flowing, you can see the glow right from your table. Definitely one of the higher end offerings in our sleepy little Volcano Village. Located inside the park, you can visit after a day of hiking, or make it a more special night out and get dressed up. Either way, make sure and call ahead and reserve a table.

Must haves

Mosquito repellent and sunscreen for sure! An umbrella might come in handy as well as a few pieces of warmer clothes. The rest of the island is hot and humid, but at 4,000 ft elevation, it can get cool and misty up here so bring a little extra something to keep you warm and cozy in the evenings. Although you can wear sandals and flip flops most places in Hawaii, you should consider some hiking boots or at least a good solid walking shoe that you don’t mind getting dirty. Our hikes can be slippery and muddy so be prepared!
