Food Scene

This is a very special place. Also, a gem that is well known but also kind of a surprise. You would never guess what was inside. It's like stepping into a jungle restaurant in the Caribbean or in Bali or some place super lush and exotic. This place is a one-two-punch because the scenery/ambiance alone makes it a must, but then it also has top notch food. If you go for dinner, make sure to go a little early for oysters and cocktails. I would highly recommend for brunch or make it a champaign brunch. You could hang here and enjoy for a long time.

The Sunset Strip is the name given to the mile-and-a-half (2.4 km) stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through West Hollywood, California. It extends from West Hollywood's eastern border with Hollywood at Havenhurst Drive, to its western border with Beverly Hills at Sierra Drive. The Strip is probably the best-known portion of Sunset, embracing boutiques, restaurants, rock clubs, and nightclubs that are on the cutting edge of the entertainment industry. The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed in urban Los Angeles. Natural asphalt (also called asphaltum, bitumen, pitch or tar—brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, the bones of animals that were trapped in the tar were preserved. The George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens from the animals that died there. The La Brea Tar Pits is a registered National Natural Landmark.

Temescal Canyon Loop offers a good workout along with ocean and canyon views. Temescal Gateway Park is situated just off Sunset Blvd in the Pacific Palisades, and this convenient urban location makes Temescal Canyon Loop a very popular hike. The basic dimensions of the loop are 2.6 miles with 1,000 feet of elevation gain, but the hike can be expanded to four miles or longer thanks to a variety of extensions. If the elevation seems too extreme, skip the Ridge Trail and enjoy a relaxing out-and-back along Canyon Trail instead, a level trail along the bottom of the canyon that makes up half of the loop. To reach the main trailhead: Cross the string of parking lots at the base of Temescal Gateway

This is really a treasure. For architecture buffs, there is a Frank Lloyd Wright house/museum. For art fans, there is an art gallery. And for all you winos, they host wine tastings every Friday in the summer (but buy tickets early because they always sell out). It's also a great spot for views and sunsets.

Iconic and beautiful, the Getty Villa is located on PCH, also on your way to Malibu. It is pretty much a must see in Southern California if you are into art of the ancient world. If you simply want to wander around a beautiful and unique and peaceful setting and pretend you are in Ancient Rome, this is it! The Getty Villa is modeled after a first-century Roman country house, the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, Italy, and it is exquisitely done, even to the point of the gardens which abound with the herbs and plants one would have found near Vesuvius. There is a nice place for lunch. Since Southern California's weather and plant life and coastal region is virtually identical to a Mediterrane

Go and watch a movie in the iconic Pantages theater! There are frequent showings and usually have a fun little pre-show prior to the actual film starting. Then go and walk around Hollywood Walk of Fame and go and see the Red Carpet around the legendary Nokia Theater where the Academy Awards/Oscars are held. Pro-tip: Park in Hollywood and Highland lot and go and buy a snack from the local stand on the way up from the elevator to get 2 hours of validation - cheapest parking in the area!

Shopping

This is way more than a market or a shopping mall. There are many food stall and restaurants, gift shops, a few bars, several butcher shops, a French market, jewelry shops, pet stores, a toy store. Really fun to walk around or just drop in for a meal. You can get breakfast, lunch or dinner. Live music on the weekends.

A great way to experience the Hollywood sign is to hike there, it is located in Griffith Park. The trail that gets you closest to the sign actually drops you behind the sign, but most trails in Griffith Park will get you a decent view. You can also take a guided hiking tour through Bikes & Hikes LA. You can drive to the Griffith Observatory and get a distant view of the sign, visit the James Dean monument, and go inside the observatory to view.
