Nice little quirky gift shop upstairs and casual lunch or dinner downstairs. A little bar for the neighbors, very local, simple and an easy walk from here.

Terrific food, charming outdoor dining, fresh flatbread. And if you want to picnic, very near the Raulston Arboretum. On the weekend, across the street from the Flea market at the fair grounds. One of my favorite lunch or dinner resources.

Low key, reasonably priced chef-mex. Located in nearby Village District, which has outdoor shopping and grocery stores.

On a nice evening, this place has lovely rooftop dining. The food is reasonable Greek, not overly fancy but good. End with their lemoncello cake and a Greek coffee. Homey, comfortable and nice. Located on the near edge of downtown.

Very local gastropub. Beer, burgers and duck confit. You know, that kind of strange industrial cool environment with good food served on metal trays and good beer that they make there. Reminds me of White Duck Tacos in Asheville, in it’s earnest hometown vibe, a good antidote to corporate mall food.

This little cafe pastry shop is nearby, nice for a light lunch or coffee and treat. My go-to for girl dates.

This is the oldest coffee shop in Raleigh, with the best hard core coffee, and also the best coffee drinks. Boho vibe, filled with students and locals thinking deep thoughts. Recommend the caramel train wreck, or the Voltaire, if you are in the mood for a caffeinated sweet treat. Grungy and delightful in that San Francisco way. Used book stores nearby to complete the feel. Recommend the Hillsborough street location.

Oh boy, seriously arty pastry, that tastes a good as it looks. My Bojangles-loving BF likes the Dixie Cannonball (biscuit with the sausage gravy inside…). And any of their fancy fancy creations are worth the calories.

On your way to Oakwood, best if the ‘hot doughnuts now’ sign is on, but good either way. Get a dozen hot glazed.

Diner/dive, only open til 2pm, but opens early. Authentic throwback kinda place, your granddaddy will be there and the waitress will call you honey. Tricky to get to, but if you like grit and grits, get the country ham with your eggs. Or streak-o-lean.

In from a long day and want just easy Chinese? This is the place. Order online, and drive or walk just up the block. The food is just fine, the dining room is likely empty if you want to eat in, but they do a huge take-out business in the hood. For tired travelers who want something familiar to eat and then crash.

Sightseeing

This is a magical garden, complete with a hobbit style gate. It is fairly large, with a cool Japanese garden, shade garden and acres of odd plants. For the garden friendly, or just a great picnic place. This is my favorite outdoor walk, outside of the neighborhood itself around the house.

Favorite hangouts

Bars, food, folks, jukeboxes.
Old school bar, now under the ownership of a guy with good taste in both food and scotch. Rub elbows with students and local politicians, very cool and timeless. Must be vaxed and have proof. Good bar food (Gabby burger, Sticky Toffee Pudding, lots of other stuff)
