Another great local coffee shop downtown Holland. It's a popular spot for Hope College students so you might not have any luck getting a table if it's during the school year.

This is a lovely, local coffee shop in Saugatuck. There is a tiny (almost hidden) garden area out back. It's one of my favorite places to get coffee in the summer.

They roast their own fair trade coffee. It’s cuter inside than it looks on the outside. We usually grab our coffee beans here for our Summer House guests.

Ice Cream

Our favorite Ice cream place! After a day at the Holland State Park beach, an evening sunset, or a climb to the top of Mt. Pisgah, ice-cream at the General Store is a must. But mostly we love to ride our bikes here just for ice cream. Side-note: my husband scooped ice-cream here as a youngster.

Parks & Beaches

Holland State Park is best known for sugar sand beaches, beautiful sunsets and views of the iconic "Big Red" lighthouse. The park is home to two popular beaches located on Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa, two modern campgrounds, concessions, paddle rentals, a new playground and connections to Holland's system of non-motorized trails. A boat launch is located one mile east of the park with a fish cleaning station. The park was acquired from the City of Holland in December 1926 and has been a popular destination since that time.

This little trail hike with oodles of stairs is so worth the climb. Once you reach the top, you can see both Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa.

Part of the Macatawa Greenway Trail that connects the Fred Meijer Kenowa Trail in Zeeland Charter Township to Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan in Park and Laketown Townships. The trail utilizes non-motorized paths and bike lanes for family-friendly bicycle and pedestrian use. Nearly 30 miles in total, the trail connects over a dozen park spaces and nature preserves. Greenway partners will continue adding trails and connecting more parks along the Macatawa River corridor. You can get a trail map online here: https://www.miottawa.org/Parks/upper.htm

Saugatuck Dunes State Park encompasses 2.5 miles of secluded Lake Michigan shoreline and 1,000 acres of steep slopes, rolling hills and fresh water coastal dunes more than 200 feet tall. The beach is a two-thirds mile hike from the picnic parking area. The park's major attraction are the long sandy beach and the 300-acre natural area, which contains a coastal dune system containing three endangered plant species. Nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers and hikers are the predominant day users. The park, located in Allegan County, is relatively undeveloped. The land was acquired in 1971 from the Augustinian Order, who used the buildings as a seminary. When the state took ownership, the structures were used as a prison and state police offices.

Neighborhoods

Downtown Holland is the cutest little shopping district. I love it because you don't have to actually shop to enjoy spending time here. There are many cute boutiques, but there are also great places to eat and enjoy a glass of wine, or get a craft beer at New Holland Brewing Company, or stop for coffee at one of the local coffee houses. Also, the sidewalks are heated so you can enjoy this goodness all winter too. There are many places to park. There are a couple covered parking ramps- one off 9th Street and one off 7th Street. There is also some parking available on 8th St, but they're usually the coveted spots. Here's a link that lists some downtown venues. although I noticed that some are not on this list: https://www.downtownholland.com/ ** Street performances on Thursdays in the summer

If you have time, you should really go to Saugatuck, a quaint little town just 10-15 min. south of Holland. It's just adorable. They also have a fabulous theatre called Mason Street Warehouse, we go to at least one of their stage productions every summer. In addition to local talent, this little theatre manages to audition in Chicago and NYC, pretty cool beans for a tiny town like Saugatuck.

Hope Summer Repertory Theatre is near downtown Holland. The theatre is on the Hope College campus, but not a college show. HSRT is running only during the summer and we've been super impressed with the quality of shows and performances lately. They've been casting some great talent. Aldi is my personal favorite- it's small and pretty inexpensive. The staff is always friendly. If you're not familiar with Aldi, you need a quarter to get a cart and bring your own bags, although they sell them and they're cheap.
