Black Butte is clearly visible from the House on Metolius, and is a fantastic day hike. There are several approaches to the summit, but most people drive to the trailhead about 2/3 of the way up, and then hike the remaining 45m-1h to the top. It can get hot, at least in the summer, so bring water. Check on the condition of the road, as it can be quite rough, and make sure you have a parking pass (or $5 to pay onsite).

While you can enjoy beautiful views of the Metolius River right on the property, it's worth a short stop at the Head of the Metolius, a few miles upstream. Here, just below the slopes of Black Butte, the whole river bubbles up from the ground in one large spring. The headwaters are located just off the road coming into Camp Sherman, and is only a short distance—an easy walk, great for small children, especially if combined with a visit to the store (and maybe an ice cream).

Head of the Metolius

It's about 1.5 miles long, and is a wonderful place for swimming, paddling, boating and even sailing, depending on the time of year. Some boats and kayaks are available for rent, but generally it is best to plan on brining your own gear.

Suttle Lake
Suttle Lake is a beautiful mountain lake about 15m from the House on Metolius. It's about 1.5 miles long, and is a wonderful place for swimming, paddling, boating and even sailing, depending on the time of year. Golf
Big Meadow is one of two golf courses at Black Butte Ranch, and is about 20m away from House on Metolius. In addition to the course, there is a driving range and practice area, as well as a new 18-hole putting course, which is a great family activity. There is also a very decent restaurant in the adjacent club house, as well as some nice walks for non-golfers.

Hoodoo is a fantastic small ski area, with 5 lifts and enough green, blue and black runs to keep everybody busy for a weekend. Usually opens in December and is open through mid-April.
