This was the start point of the “Mayflower”: the boat which brought the first Europeans to emigrate to the USA. This neighbor also shows how Rotterdam was like before it was bombed in 1940. A must! I suggest you to try the “5 tastes” beers at the bar next to the church: they have their own brewery!

Erasmusbrug (English: "Erasmus Bridge") is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The bridge was named after Desiderius Erasmus, a prominent Christian renaissance humanist also known as Erasmus of Rotterdam. The 802-metre-long (2,631 ft) bridge across the New Meuse was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The cable-stayed bridge section has a single 139-metre-high (456 ft) asymmetrical pale blue pylon with a prominent horizontal base, earning the bridge its nickname "The Swan".

Cube houses (Dutch: Kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimise the space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside. The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, right above the Blaak metro station. There are 38 small cubes and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other. As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of offering tours to visitors.

The backdrop of impressive historic ships makes the Oude Haven (Old Port, part of the Maritime District) a popular place for locals to meet, eat, drink and dance. On summer days, the terraces of the bars and restaurants here like Noah (voted best cocktail bar in the Netherlands) are full until the wee hours. Right behind ‘The White House’, Europe’s first skyscraper, you will find café Het Witte Huis, open late for drinks and dining. Other hotspots here are Stockholm, Mooii and Popocatepetl. The Oude Haven is part of the Maritime District and can be reached by metro or train (stop Blaak) or water taxi.

The park next to the Euromast doesn't have a name and is simply called het park, but sometimes it's also called the Euromast park or Zochers park, named after the architect. You can relax in this green oasis and escape from the hectics of the nearby city centre. Rotterdam's biggest park is the park at Lake Kralingen, which is located a bit further away from the city centre. The Park is located along the river Maas and next to the Euromast and Scheepvaartkwartier. From nearly any place in the park you've got a magnificient view at the Euromast. The eastern part of the park dates from 1853 and was designed by architect Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul in English landscape style. The park was extended in 1886 when the western part, also called the Hill was added to the park. On a sunny day you can sit in the grass and picnic but if you prefer full service on an outdoor terrace, do visit the trendy Harbour Club Rotterdam. The Harbour Club is located in a lofty building, On this unique spot, the Parkzicht dance club used to be located. Parkzicht was well known as the cradle of the house music in the beginning of the nineties. You can combine your visit to the park with a visit to the Euromast, but also with a visit to minigolf Parkhaven that is also located in this park!

Hotel New York opened its doors in 1993. The building on the banks of the River Maas was formerly the Holland America Line head office. It dates from 1917 and is typical of the period. The building s air of nostalgia brings to mind the drama of Dutch immigrants setting sail from here to seek a new life in North America. The hotel has 72 bedrooms, seven function rooms and two restaurants whose high ceilings, colourful lamps, robust pipes and pillars and shipping features give it a nautical, industrial ambience. Groups of up to 25 people are welcome from early morning to late evening to enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, drinks and/or dinner. The restaurant menu includes many classic dishes from Caesar Salad to Rib-eye steaks. The Oyster Bar serves all kinds of seafood fresh every day, from Fruits de Mer to half lobsters. In the basement you’ll find restaurant and cocktail bar NY Basement : a place more intimate and exclusive than the Hotel New York restaurant. The classic interior takes you back to the 1920s and 30s in roaring pre-war Manhattan – the very place where so many immigrants arrived on the Holland-America Line after having left their homelands for good. The hotel is at the end of the Wilhelmina Pier in the Kop van Zuid district. There are a number of car parks and garages nearby. Wilhelminaplein metro station is about a 5-minute walk away and the hotel can also be accessed by water taxi. Hotel New York is part of the WestCord Hotels Group.

One of the loveliest and most romantic spots of Rotterdam is the Veerhaven inner harbour, where historic sailing ships rock gently on the water. The Veerhaven is situated in the Scheepvaartkwartier, a protected urban landscape. Imposing town houses line broad, stately lanes, recalling Rotterdam’s rich history in shipping. If you long for a glass of wine and a nice bite to eat, check out the cuisine at Loos or Zinc. The Veerhaven has its own stop for the Water taxi service and the Hotel New York Ferry.
