Food Scene

If you want to experience a truly Somerset pub on the Somerset levels then The Sheppey is a must. Booking much of the time is essential as people come from many miles around thanks to the brilliant, eclectic musicians it attracts, its fine selection of local ales and ciders (including all kinds of one-offs and speciality brews), and its fantastic food. There has been a pub here for many centuries - the entrance is very Somerset so park up and walk in!!

No visit to Somerset would be complete without a walk or drive up the outstanding Cheddar gorge and a visit to the caves or walk around the top of the gorge. The gorge is truly breathtaking and seems to wind on and on - there is a wonderful walk around the top of the gorge (not for the feint-hearted) which starts opposite the tourist information centre. Jacobs Ladder is worth climbing for views but is quite a way up!

If you have never seen Bridgwater Carnival and you are staying in November when it is held it is well worth going to see. Really stunning floats which are worked on by the carnival clubs throughout the year, its a popular local custom that includes young people right through to the older generation. Reserve a table at Prezzos very early on to get a great view inside or if you can't make Bridgwater then there are several other towns that host the carnival. Glastonbury and North Petherton are good ones to attend. Collections of coins for charity. If you only want to stay for a while then park near Mole Valley farmers and walk along the road to the start of the procession in Bridgwater.

Brean Down has a history dating back to the Stone Age and is a lovely energetic walk onto this National Trust owned peninsula. The Fort at the end was built as a defence during the Napoleonic wars and although is in ruins you can wander around it - its a lovely afternoon out and you can have a cuppa at the cafe near the start.
