Rafina is a charming town and port, with developed tourist infrastructure. It resembles to a small island with its scenic beachfront lined up with cafes, bars and fish taverns which are reasonably priced. Parking is good, but due to it being busy, get there early. Eat where the Greeks eat and you won't be disappointed. Rafina port is also an excellent choice for a day trip to one of the northern Cycladic island of Andros. There is a year round ferry route and the ferry ride takes only two hours until Andros. Andros is a verdant island, characterized by long naval history and rich culture. Its highlights include the main village and capital Chora, famous for the elegant architecture, historical mansions and museums, as well as several sandy beaches, such as Golden Beach, Batsi and Agios Petros.

Take Vravrona Avenue to the Temple of Artemis situated near present day Vrarona. In ancient times Vravrona was one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica. It is celebrated on account of the worship of Artemis Brauronia. According to Greek mythology, as the Greek fleet was preparing to sail to Troy to force the return of Helen, they gathered in Aulis near the Euripus Strait. While there, their leader, king Agamemnon, killed a stag sacred to the goddess Artemis. The enraged deity retaliated by preventing favourable winds so that the Greek fleet could not sail to Troy. This eventually forced king Agamemnon to agree to sacrifice his daughter, Ifigeneia, in order to ensure a favorable wind for his fleet. Grief stricken, Ifigeneia agreed to the sacrifice for the good of her people. However, just as the princess was about to be sacrificed Artemis intervened and a surrogate sacrifice of a dear was exchanged for Ifigenia through the goddess' intervention. The saved girl then became a priestess of the goddess among the Tauri people who lived near the Black Sea in the Crimean peninsula. Later Iphigenia returned from the Tauri and the goddess Athena reveals that Iphigenia will create a temple and sanctuary in Brauron (now Vravrona) and there be the priestess of Artemis will live, die and be buried. Excavation of the site began in 1945. Among the fifth-century monuments which have been found are the Π-shaped stoa around the interior courtyard, opening toward the temple of Artemis; the small temple (perhaps a heroon of Ifigeneia); and the stone bridge over the Erasinos River. Building repair inscriptions from the site list many more structures than have been recovered to this point, including a palaestra and a gymnasion. There is an aura of peace and tranquility that surrounds this location and we enjoy going back time and time again just to soak up the atmosphere and gain some equilibrium.
