Food Scene

Coffee here is always lovely - although I'm always happy to share a cup of the great French press stuff I make with my guests. They have pretty cookies and make fresh soups and sandwiches daily.

They make delicious South American sandwiches called arepas. The service is very friendly, and they also make custom tea blends and delicious fried plantains, chochones and paella.

Housed in a gorgeously restored Standard Oil service station, the restaurant is a 3-block walk from the apartment and has great BBQ, not to mention all manner of farm-to-table goodness and a patio for outdoor dining in the spring and summer. Full bar, too. They make great lunch and dinner, not to mention Sunday brunch.

If you like a good German pretzel and a hundred beer choices, this is the spot. They also offer very good pub trivia on Tuesdays at 8, and are about three blocks from the house. In the summer, they use the large attached plaza for outdoor concerts and dining. It's a beautiful building - converted church.

Drinks & Nightlife

Iconic Detroit bar is just steps from the front door - no driving after you enjoy a whiskey and a little live music on the odd Thursday. Marge's has been written up as the best place to catch a Red Wings game. They also make a tasty burger on the cheap.

Parks & Nature

My guests can swim at this lovely park if I accompany them. Always happy to give you a lift to the pool, even if I can't stay. Lovely views of sailboats and Lake Saint Clair here.

Small, excellent grocery. Family-owned and operated for 40 years. Great selection of beer and wine, too, as well as fresh fruit, bakery items and even a selection of fudge (made in Michigan).

Arts & Culture

The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House sits on acres of lush gardens by the lake. The home is a museum, and is one of the few places in the Detroit area where you can see Alfred Kahn's architecture as a fully realized family home. They host outdoor movies in the summer, garden tours, home tours and special events like symphony performances (which sell out quick).

The Heidelberg Project is two blocks of folk art, including elaborately painted houses and a large central lawn covered in outsider sculpture made with items like car hoods, stuffed animals, and even an old rowboat. The artist, Tyree Guyton, works at the site most days, and is occasionally happy to talk to tourists. It's a great spot for photography, especially when it's sunny - year round.
