Food Scene

A range of local restaurants and take aways that I favour (and I do like my food!) chosen to reflect a simple combination of proximity and the reliable quality of their food.
Excellent Caribbean food, very friendly service - I particularly like their Brown Stew with Rice and Peas. Take Away only.

A great Brunch spot (open 9am-5pm only); Really amazing food, not possible to book, so it is impossible to get a table on the weekend (people queue around the block then), BUT it is quite easy to get a table without having to queue at all on a weekday, so it is well worth going Mon-Fri if you need somewhere nearby in the day time... Sunday is at 169 Hemingford Road, N1 (Turn right onto Roman Way and walk to the roundabout at the end where Roman Way, Hemingford Road and Offord Road all meet - there you will also find La Taberna restaurant and the Hemingford Arms, so it is a really good little spot for eating and drinking).

Extraordinary menu, highly original, lots of imagination with vegetables (but also plenty of meat and fish), very impressive. Pricier than most of the places I suggest here, so I haven't been that recently, but I did find it very impressive.

Traditional English "Cafe" - Full English breakfast, best bubble and squeak around, great atmosphere, very popular. I really love it - If you want to discover basic English ordinary fare at it's absolute best, this is a supreme example of our culinary culture - (eg. a fry-up with bubble and squeak, washed down with a mug of tea). Yum-yum; delicious and very traditional with no ostentation or pretence, and only 3 minutes walk, I was delighted to find this so close to the flat when I moved in. Also, if you've had a heavy night and need a filling breakfast/brunch to help you recover, this is the place to start. If you are in search of an authentic cultural experience, you won't get more "real London" than this. You can scrutinise the walls of the historic (still functioning since 1840's) Pentonville prison that is directly across the road and if you time it right, may well find yourself eating in the company of 'screws' (prison staff).

Really good Italian restaurant where you will receive a genuinely warm welcome from the small family who own and run it themselves - delicious food and very friendly considerate people, this is one of my favourite places to eat out and to recommend to others, and it is only a few minutes walk (Turn right onto Roman Way and walk for about 3 minutes - it is on the left just before the roundabout that you cross to get to "Sunday" and "The Hemingford Arms" both of which I've also listed here).

Really fantastic Indian food (created with an innovative Persian touch) served in a buzzy busy yet light and positive atmosphere where the innovative decor also leaves one charmed and enchanted. I really like Dishoom and so, it appears to others as there are a number of them around London now. My local Dishoom is just down the road in King's Cross and I suggest you don't just take my word for it, but research it online and then devote a little time to going there for a really good meal.

One of London's oldest Vegetarian restaurants (originally in Soho, but now with a number of branches across London). I'm not vegetarian, but I've loved going to Mildred's for over 30 years because the food is so reliably delicious.

Nearest, nicest pub - good atmosphere, good food, an easy walk down Roman Way. They offer Thai food and also screen many sports on the large screens inside their ivy-covered walls.
