Negombo Beach is a long stretch of beach. It's a nice place for a long walk, to walk in the sand, and to get one's feet wet. It's also a marvelous place to experience local life and to interact with locals. Taking a ball or a frisbee with you provides a super way of interacting with the locals.
There are many bars and restaurants along the beach.
