One of the most controversial DC developments planned to destroy this Historic Landmark Park (25 acres above ground, 20 acres of beautiful vaulted caverns below ground), built by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. (Olmsted family designed NY Central Park, Niagara Falls, US Mall, the zoo, etc) as a public park and memorial to the late Michigan Senator James McMillan of 1901-1902. DC's first de facto inter-racial park. It is unique in that the park was designed to work with, & disguise, the huge water filtration utility plant & reservoir. Bloomingdale community has fought DC representatives for decades, but have been losing the fight due to corrupt dealings between Council Members & Developer friends &/or donors. The city fenced off the park and refuses tours since visitors often want to fight the development. But you can still walk around the amazing site-and hopefully find your way in to see the underground caverns before they are lost forever. 3 blocks from the AirBnB up 1st St NW. http://friendsofmcmillan.org/ https://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/13000022.htm

After you're done visiting the Capitol, head up to the Northeast quadrant to see the columns that originally supported the old East Portico of the Capitol building. The 446-acre site also houses a major center of botanical research and a 390-year-old bonsai tree that survived an atomic bomb. If you can get ticket-Take the full moon hike. The four-mile long hike is a magical trip through moonlit gardens, meadows, and woods. And the hike is special in every season, so there is really no excuse not to lace up your hiking boots and get out there this winter.

Arts & Culture

Most visitors say it's one of their favorites. Official presidential portraits are located here & the temporary special exhibits which show in room next to the presidential portraits is always great.

Built in a church covered from head to toe in vibrant colors. Can you go inside? Of course! Blind Whino is a non-profit arts club and event space that features exhibits, events, live performances, and artist workshops. While not located by the National Mall, it's still one of the best museums in Washington, D.C. with some of the coolest art around.

Essentials

This market (walk through cafe) has lots of great stuff. It's a bit more expensive as it is a convenience store, but worth it for quick convenience. They have wine & beer also. There is a closer old, rougher, corner store called the Flagler Market 1 block away on W/Flagler, but I use it for only most basic things when I just can't make the slightly longer walk to Windows Cafe).
