Restaurants
This is right next door to the Blue Wave Beach Cottage! Simply Delicious is a charming little restaurant with good food. It's popular with locals and tourists so there can be a wait to get in, but you can always order to go and walk back next door with your goods! The pies are fantastic.

The food here is great. I've not had a meal here that I've not thoroughly enjoyed. Their menu includes a very nice selection of vegan foods. They have a very large beer selection, along with wine and mixed drinks. Though there is a bar, the outdoor patio in back is good for families, too. There are games to play out back while you wait for your food. It does get crowded on the weekends! 4th Street Fillin Station is only a few blocks from the Cottage.

In a little strip mall in Cape Canaveral, I love the breakfasts here because they're super tasty with fresh ingredients, and they don't leave you with a heavy feeling. Just the right ratio of tasty food and tasty fats! There can be quite a line of people waiting to get in on the weekends.

Great organic coffee and tasty deserts! And you can sip and watch surf movies at the same time. Super neat place with lots of interesting seating areas. They also serve healthy snacks! Less than a block from the Cottage on the other side of the street.

The seafood at Seafood Atlantic is literally fresh off the boat. Seafood Atlantic is at Port Canaveral, and one of my favorite things to do is to sit on their outdoor patio and watch workers unload fishing boats directly into this restaurant and seafood market. In fact, you can drive to Seafood Atlantic (15-20 minutes, depending), pick out the fish or shellfish you want at the market, take it back to the Cottage, cook it, and have an amazing and super fresh meal on the deck outside!

Pat’s Place serves yummy food, including pizza, gyros, all kinds of salads, subs on handmade rolls, handmade spinach pie, and the best baklava in the area. There are things on the menu for vegetarians and vegans, too. And, it’s owned by my niece, Marie!! (she’s not a Pat) It’s in Indian Harbor Beach and about a 25 minute drive away, but if you’re in the market for some Florida style clothing or home goods, you can stop at Bealls, which is just across the street, then stop by Pat’s Place for a tasty meal after all that shopping! They’re open Monday through Friday, 11:00 to 7:30, and closed Saturday and Sunday. 279 E Eau Gallie Blvd, Melbourne (beach side)

Nightlife
The Beach Shack has been describe as a hole in the wall, and people complain about the lack of A/C, but I love this place. The back patio sits right on the dunes, so you can grab a drink inside and find a spot outside to watch the waves and people coming and going to the beach. Another thing that draws me here is the live blues music which is usually great. Has a couple of pool tables. Right on Minuteman Causeway, 1-1/2 blocks from the Cottage.

Heidi's Jazz Club and the Heidelberg Restaurant are institutions in Cocoa Beach. Heidi's has live jazz from Wednesday through Sunday. Sunday nights is a live jam session, and I'm told by friends that some amazing musicians stop by from time to time. Just a block and a half from the Cottage!

Shopping & Looking
Core Surf has an amazing collection of new and vintage (and historic) surf boards. Dennis, the owner, is passionate about surfing, surfing's history and lifestyle. I don't surf myself, but I love going in to look at the surf boards and talk with Dennis about surfing. Core Surf also does rentals and can set you up with lessons.

Coastal Market is about a 1-1/2 blocks from the Cottage, just this side of Minuteman Causeway. It's a cute little grocery store and deli. You can go there to pick up supplies for the kitchen, or for lunch or a snack. There's plenty of parking in their parking lot, but it's also an easy walk from the Cottage.

What's called 'Historic Cocoa Village" is the area of Cocoa along the Indian River that was originally settled in the mid-1800's. It's on the mainland, just over the 520 bridge in to Cocoa. Many of the buildings date from the 1800's and early 1900's. Cocoa Village is walkable and charming, and there are all kinds of shops, galleries and restaurants. If you like hardware stores, check out Travis Hardware, founded in 1892. It's amazing. They have an incredible inventory. Some of it from 1892.

The software that allows me to create this guidebook requires I search for a specific place. The place I want to recommend is any of the crossovers to the beach in Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral which is not a single place, so I'm using the Cottage to recommend spending some time at one of these crossovers. If you drive to the end of any of the streets (no fee for parking in Cape Canaveral), you'll see that they each have their own character and attraction. Many of them have a little seating area of some kind where you can sit and enjoy the sound and site of the waves. Head over to one of these at dusk, night time or sunrise and just sit, relax and talk. It's magical. From the Cottage, you can easily walk to the 2nd and 3rd Street crossovers.
