Food Scene
Skip the long lines at the restaurant and go to the bar! The restaurant is often crowded, but the lounge has great service, the same views and the same menu without the wait. Go before six during the high season to get a good spot. During the off-season and every day except for Saturday, they have happy hour between three and six and half price wine on Tuesdays.

Fun restaurant on the Bayfront next to the decks where the sea lions hang out. Great views from both levels, but we really like the second level with its 3-sided fireplace, cool loungy vibe and extra-good sea lion antic views. You can’t go wrong with the tableside Smore’s.

Nice little spot in the heart of Nye Beach. A great spot to order takeout or stop in and grab some calamari, homemade pasta, or a prosciutto pizza.

Intimate little spot serving genuine bistro-style fare on a Newport side street. Friendly but sometimes slow service, excellent coffee and pastries. Full menu, good Benedicts and now open for dinner some nights. Expect a wait on weekends and the high season unless you get there early.

This is a local spot where you will see a lot of local chefs eating. They are only open for dinner on Thursdays, and breakfast Friday through Sunday. Bring cash because they don’t take credit cards. Extensive menu and good food.

This restaurant is located just across the street from the performing arts Center in from three of our listings, Captain’s Landing, Captain’s Quarters and The Landing. It was recently purchased, and is run by Hallmark Resorts, who also run another of our favorites Georgedes beach side grill. Fans of George’s will recognize some similar dishes on the menu. New place This is a casual and fun restaurant with good ocean views and service. There is also a cozy bar with a fireplace in the back. They have on-site parking, a nice feature in downtown Nye Beach. A great place to come before or after a performance at the PAC.

Great little wine shop located in the heart of Nye Beach. Zach, the proprietor, is extremely knowledgable, gives great recommendations and has reasonable prices. Check out their wine tastings.

This is a fun experience and one that my family enjoys when they are in town. Tables of Content is located inside the historic Sylvia Beach Hotel, which is itself well worth a visit to see the author-themed rooms (Sundays mid-day are a great time to visit. If you ask politely, you will likely be allowed upstairs to see the rooms that are being turned that day. Jules Verne is my favorite room.) Tables of Content, as of this writing offers five different entrees each night, (one vegetarian) and soup, salad and sides served family style. They also provide dessert and coffee. All for $35, which seems very reasonable given the quality of the food and the presentation. Wine and beer are available for purchase. The chef recommends pairings with each entree. You need to make a reservation in advance, and you need to call the day of your reservation, as the entrees change daily, to select the entrees for your party. Seating is family style with a mix of hotel guests and locals. Sylvia Beach is renowned for its literary affinity, and many authors stay here. On our last visit we sat with three friends from Australia, Canada and Portland celebrating a birthday, and a couple from Astoria up the coast. A well known and favorite game when the restaurant manager is there is "Two Lies and a Truth" which guests play sometimes into the wee hours.

Sightseeing
A great place for instagramable pictures. There is also a lot of information in the visitor's center, tidepools, and hiking trails. The only known Peregrine Falcon nesting spot adjacent to a parking lot is also here! Also a good gift shop and selection of local books. Be sure to reserve lighthouse tours in advance. If you have a national parks card, the visit is free for everyone in your car.

A lovely setting above Yaquina Bay and the ocean. This is where the families of local fisherman gather to watch for their loved ones when a storm threatens ships trying to cross the bar into the harbor. The original lighthouse was only used for three years, but has been restored and is the only lighthouse on the Oregon Coast where you can see how the lightkeeper and their family lived. Also good for a picnic and dog friendly (except the lighthouse).

Any dinosaur, fossil, or meteor fans or rockhounds in your group? Don't miss this place! From the animatronic baby T-Rex in the entry, to the rare and full dinosaur skeletons on display, this store is a feast for the eyes. The owner displays some of his extensive fossil and meteor collection, and there are plenty available for purchase at prices from $10 to over $100,000. Kiddos can pan for gold or cut their own geode. Lots of fun for all ages.

A great place to keep in your pocket for a rainy day. Admission is by donation ($20 suggested for a family of four) and the giant octopus feedings are a highlight - check the website for current days and times. Many good exhibits and you can easily spend a morning or afternoon here.

Whale Watching Tours
There are small tours based out of Depoe Bay that will get you up close and personal with the resident pod of gray whales. Read the Yelp reviews and book in advance due to the small size of the boats.

The Goodwill Boutique on Cape (by Walgreens)
There are only six Goodwill Boutiques in Oregon. Newport has one of the best I've seen, and I'm a dedicated thrifter. This boutique specializes in designer clothing, handbags, shoes, nautical themed artwork and tchotchkes, games and jewelry. It is beautifully curated, and I have purchased lots of artwork for $25 a piece on average. A recent shopping trip scored six designer sweaters (Ralph Lauren cashmere, Pendleton cashmere, etc.), one with tags still on, for $125. Helpful staff, a constantly changing array of quality goods. This is a must for my family every time they come to visit.
