Sightseeing

For your first short walk, I recommend a stroll to Pennard Castle. From the bungalow, walk 50 metres downhill, turn left onto Norton Drive, and then walk for 10 minutes straight along the edge of the golf course until you reach the castle. From the castle, there are breath-taking views of the valley below and Three Cliffs Bay. Follow the path further and you will find an easy path leading down to the beach. Public footpaths across the golf course are marked with stones painted white. Dogs are allowed on Three Cliffs Beach at all times of the year. Except at high tide, to get onto the beach, walking from the Castle, you can either wade through Pennard Pill if the tide is out, or cross the stream using the stepping stones provided. When returning from the beach, if the tide is coming in, don’t leave it too late to cross the stepping stones or you will have a long walk home via Parkmill! Three Cliffs Bay can also be accessed from Parkmill and there are footpaths alongside Pennard Pill on both sides of the stream leading to the beach. You can also get to Pobbles beach by following the footpath from the castle around the headland where the three cliffs are located. In summer, a good time to swim at Three Cliffs Bay is when the tide is coming in over the warm sand, when I have known the water temperature to reach 25C. There is a life guard on duty on the beach in summer.

Neighbourhoods

There is a Premier Store at 37 Linkside Drive that stays open until 8 pm. This shop caters for most of your grocery and household requirements. The Coop in Bishopston stays open until 10 pm. For a larger shop, Tescos Supermarket in Swansea Marina is about a 15 minute drive away, or about a 30 minute ride on a No 14 bus, with the bus stop being near the Premier Store.

Mumbles is my favourite shopping centre and it is just a 10 minute car ride from the bungalow. M&S provide 2 hours free parking in their basement carpark. Otherwise parking in Mumbles can be difficult at busy times. I recommend either the car park on the front as you enter Mumbles, turning left as soon as you see the White Rose Hotel straight ahead, or the long-term car park in a disused quarry to the right. Mumbles Castle is in a much better state of preservation than Pennard Castle and it is well worth a visit during opening hours.

The Three Cliffs Coffee Shop in Southgate is a good base for a walk along the cliffs. Park in the National Trust car park, or drive down Hael Lane past the cottages and park free on the left! When looking out to sea, turn right, and walk for a mile or so along the cliffs for stunning views of Pobbles Bay, Three Cliffs Bay and Oxwich Bay beyond. The coffee shop has excellent coffee, newspapers, meals, and a general store and a post office are attached.
