Waterfalls

St Columbia Falls is about a 30 minute drive from St Helens, It takes about a 15 minute walk to reach the falls via a defined track. The falls cascade down about 90m, one of Tasmania’s highest. The walk to the base of the falls is definitely another highlight. It takes you through cool and shady rainforest that has some of the tallest treeferns you’ll see anywhere. Once at the lookout you’ll crane your neck as you watch the South George River tumbling down in a delightful series of steep cascades. Return uphill via the same track. Keep an eye in the river near the base of the falls and you may spot a few small trout. You can get lunch at the Pyengana dairy cafe and taste some lovely cheeses. There are other waterfalls in the area and further information is available at the St Helens tourist centre and at Seahouse.

GRAY MARES TAIL FALLS A tall but typically low-flowing waterfall, Gray Mares Tail is an easy 10 min walk, just before the road starts descending down St Marys Pass. To find the falls, look for an easy-to-miss pullout with a sign marking the St Marys Pass State Reserve on the left. From here a sign points to Gary Mares Tail falls. The short and easy trail winds through the forest, before coming to a lookout platform overlooking the top section of the falls. While the part that can be viewed easily is a decent 20 metre drop, the creek looks to keep cascading further below, and the total height of the falls is likely to be well in excess of 50 metres. Best viewed after recent rain events.
