This is an incredible valley with a big black sand beach. There is a spectacular view it from the lookout, but getting into the valley is more challenging. The road is extremely steep such that 4-wheel drive is necessary (terrain down in the valley requires 4-wheel drive as well). If you are lucky you can catch a ride in the back of a truck with a local, otherwise it is a very strenuous hike into the valley and then back out again.

It is a long drive across the island, but if you are lucky enough to be there at a time when you can see lava flowing it is a once in a lifetime experience.
