Picture perfect neighbouring village of Milton Abbas showcases 36 identical thatched cottages made originally for the relocated villagers of the first Earl of Dorchester, owner of Milton Abbey and created within a wooded valley setting designed by Capability Brown - England's Greatest Gardner'. We recommend starting at the top, it's the perfect place to have a drink or meal at the Hambro Arms pub then take a stroll down the street viewing the cottages each side and discover the lake and lodge at the bottom of the hill. The best surprise happens half a mile round the corner from there when the lane opens out into the vast formal parkland setting of Milton Abbey itself. All a must see! Go by car first so you can decide which bits you want to walk to or park up at. It's only a 3.5 mile drive from Peaceful Cottage or a 2 mile walk up and over the hill.

Step into a fairy tale with this fascinating day out both inside the sumptuously decorated castle and the colourful formal gardens, lake and grounds. Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594. Walled Garden Restaurant Tea rooms, tours and a souvenir shop to boot! (you'll recognise a blue tea towel at Peaceful Cottage purchased from here by the owners during their own day out here). Highly recommended! PLUS at the gates to the long drive is the Castle Garden Centre (TheGardensGroup). Another lovely stop to find something to take home with you. High quality with a very friendly cafe. Visit in December and there's a magical twinkling grotto of festive decorations.
