Sightseeing

Plan to spend about 1.5 hours here so you can take the tour, lead by the marine biologists to see the coral restoration, then go in the plantation home to learn the history of the sugar cane crops started by the Danish. This includes the slavery on the island, which is heartbreaking to o important. Slavery in the USVI ended 13 years earlier than on the mainland USA.

This is the first sugar plantation on the island built by the first Governor of St. Croix when the Danish took over the USVI. PLUS, new to St. Croix is The Nature Conservancy! Our island and San Juan, PR were chosen as scientific research and coral preservation. How cool is that? So when you go to see the plantation, which also has a sugar mill and other buildings on the property, you can also go on a free tour by marine biologist's to see how we're growing new coral for our Caribbean sea.

Currently you may walk around the grounds, but the big house and a couple of the buildings are closed for repair after the hurricanes. I think you'll still like so see this sugar plantation because it has a windmill and also a mill worked by horses or oxen to mill the sugar cane. It's not far from the University of St. Croix which really pretty and right on the sea!
