Fort George, Inverness is worth a visit. Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life.

If you want the best chance of seeing the Monster, take a boat trip, ideally fitted with special onboard sonar systems…. Cruise Loch Ness are in the village by the canal swing bridge (5-10 mins walk away). They run daily cruises and, for thrill seekers, have a RIB offering a high-speed option. There are longer boat trips by Jacobite Tours from Tomnahurich Bridge, Inverness which cruise Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal.

On route, Eileen Donan Castle is definitely worth a visit as is the beautiful coastal village ‘Plockton’. Because of its spectacular setting and traditional Highland atmosphere, Plockton has appeared in numerous film and television productions, the most well known being the BBC’s ‘Hamish Macbeth’ series.
