Beaches

• Polzeath and New Polzeath. These are the two closest beaches – being 3 miles or a max 10 min car journey from Tresweden. New Polzeath is quiet with less surf than Polzeath and in our opinion is great for families with small children. It has a lovely protected beach, which does produce some good waves and is ok for bodyboarding but not surfing. At low tide there is really excellent rock pooling and you can walk around the beach to the main beach at Polzeath. There is a car park at the top giving easy access to the beach. There is a public toilet close to the car park. New Polzeath does lack the shops and cafes, which you find in Polzeath, but it is a favourite of ours as it provides peace and tranquility and never gets as crowded as the main beach. The ice cream van does drive round when the tide is out. Mr Surfy’s situated at the top of the headland provides tea, coffee, hot chocolate and pancakes in funky cool surfer dude environment with fantastic views. On a sunny evening the views are sublime. The main beach at Polzeath is large and one of the best for surfing and body boarding in Cornwall. Lifeguards patrol it during the peak months. Access is via Polzeath, which has many shops and eateries. There is parking on the beach, next to the shops and also on the hills next to the beach. It does get very busy in the summer so get down early and set out your pitch. You can book surfing lessons on the beach through Wavehunters 01208880617 wavehunters.co.uk and activities such as coast steering, kayaking and paddle boarding through Cornish costal Adventures 0120888028 cornishcostaladventures.com There are also other companies operating on the beach too. All activities are easy to book. Both beaches are surrounded by beautiful cliff and coastal path scenery. You can walk the costal path in either direction ~ one direction leads to Daymer Bay, the other towards Pentire point. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at Daymer Bay in high season.

Dog friendly beach

This is also 3 miles from Tresweden in the direction of Rock and Trebetherick. Daymer Bay runs alongside the Camel estuary from the headland near Polzeath to Rock. It is tidal but does not produce surf. It is very sandy and popular with families with small children. Dogs are allowed on this beach throughout the year. It’s a great beach for flying a kite, kite surfing, windsurfing or launching a canoe, kayak or paddleboard. (If you have your own as they are not for rent on this beach). There are also some rock pools to spend many an hour investigating at low tide. You can also fish from this beach or the rocks close by – mullet, bass and Pollack. You can pitch in the dunes at the back of the beach and fall asleep in the sun or walk to Rock along the beach at low tide or up over the headland or along the golf course at high tide. It’s a picturesque and lovely walk either way with the Blue tomato café and other of Rock’s refreshment spots waiting for you at the other end. Once in Rock you can catch a fast passenger ferry across to Padstow. Walking in the other direction along the coastal path brings you to Polzeath. It’s a super and relatively short walk with lovely views and beautiful coastline. Parking at Daymer Bay is plentiful. It’s a pay and display car park with money being collected at the gate on entry. There are public toilets and a small café. From Daymer Bay, you can access St Enodoc’s Church where Sir John Betjeman, the poet laurite, was buried. From the church you can walk adjacent to the golf course, to Rock. All in all, it’s a beautiful spot with super views. Dogs are allowed on this beach all year.

• Rock and Porthilly Rock beach is a continuation of Daymer Bay with good sand and right on the main Camel Estuary. Rock is a rather exclusive enclave in a beautiful spot on the River Camel. It has many large and very expensive houses and is undergoing something of a construction boom over recent years with large modern “grand design” houses being built on plots were once 1940’s bungalows stood. Rock has excellent watersports facilities with the Camel Ski School 01208 862727 camelskischool.co.uk being located there – waterskiing, wakeboarding, banana boats, sofa rides, doughnuts and kayaking. Our kids have all learned to waterski here over the years and it’s safe and exhilarating! A family trip on the banana boat is also a must. You can also book various boat trips from there - sightseeing, wildlife watching or fishing trips. From Rock you can catch the water taxi to Padstow – it’s a short trip of 2-3 minutes and runs late in the evening in peak season. We would recommend parking in Rock and getting the water taxi over to Padstow rather than trying to park in Padstow in the summer.

Lundy Bay Park in the National Trust car park, walk cross the road and follow the path down to the beach. There’s a slight scramble to get over the rocks onto the beach, but it’s well worth it.

Sightseeing

Port Isaac Lovely fishing village famous for the Fisherman’s friends a cappella sea shanty group and of course, Doc Martin is filmed there (Port Wenn). You’ll be able to find Squeezy Belly Alley here, which is a tiny alleyway between two cottages and is officially the narrowest street in Britain. Great fish and chip shop, you’ll probably have to queue though. Nathan Outlaw has a couple of restaurants there which are excellent, one of which has just been voted best in England and is a 2 star Michelin restaurant. There are also several pubs which do great food and beer / wine.

Minack Theatre The Minack Theatre, Porthcurno, Penzance TR19 6JU 01736810181 The Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre, constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea. The theatre is at Porthcurno, 4 miles from Land's End in Cornwall, England. It will take about an hour from Tresweden to get there. Look for their program as there are many excellent productions. We have gone many times over the years with all ages of family. You can take a picnic to your “seats”. On a summer night the experience is unique, fantastic and one you will remember for a long time.
