“If you want to escape the busy Amsterdam life, take an afternoon biking trip to Durgerdam. The ferry behind Central Station will take you to Amsterdam North (take the one to IJ-plein). The route there will take you through old Dutch wooden fishing villages and Durgerdam has beautiful views over the IJselmeer. There's an okay cafe there, which is especially nice in summer, as it has a terrace on the water. You could also go for a swim there. ”

“The village of Durgerdam with its listed buildings lies on the Waterlandse Zeedijk (dyke). The dyke was raised by the labour of farmers using spades in the 13th century. Before the sand banks in the Zuiderzee (sea) expanded and the Afsluitdijk (dyke) cut off this maritime channel forever, Durgerdam was an important harbour on the Zuiderzee. A number of well known captains came from here. After the decline of the Dutch merchant navy, the inhabitants lived mostly off fishing, and in particular, herring fishing. A supercute little village along the shores of the IJmeer (IJlake) (go on your bike when the weather allows it)”

“Walking around the KNSM and Borneo islands is a fantastic pass time. You can sometimes see huge ships pass by, but the architecture and the urban design are also worth exploring. During winter evenings I like to walk here with music on my ears. On summer days, kids know exactly where to go for safe swimming.”
