¿Dónde vas a estar?

Dresden, Sachsen, Alemania

If you want to get an idea of what made Dresden once famous as a baroque residential city, ideally you should start your exploration tour of Dresden in the Inner New Town.

Here they still exist, the narrow, winding streets of the old city with their winding backyards and passages - a picturesque, small-scale cityscape that once characterized large parts of Dresden's city center and then so tragically perished in the firestorms of 1945.

The baroque quarter of Innere Neustadt represents the last preserved baroque residential and commercial quarter of Dresden and is thus one of the most important sights of the city.

The heart of the baroque quarter is Königstraße, which was built in the first half of the 18th century.

When Altendresden on the right bank of the river Elbe was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1685, reconstruction was initially slow due to poor economic conditions.

Under the reign of Elector Augustus I - later known as "Augustus the Strong" - Altendresden finally began a consistent expansion into a baroque planned city that lasted several decades.

From 1722 to 1732, Königstraße was laid out as a boulevard according to the designs of Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann.
In 1732, the name "Neue Stadt bey Dresden" (New Town near Dresden) was mentioned in writing for the first time; the current name of the district goes back to this.

The approximately 340-meter-long, linden-lined Königstraße is part of the star-shaped layout of the Inner Neustadt and is seen as a visual prelude to the Japanese Palace, which today houses the Museum of Ethnology.

Together with Hauptstraße, the central pedestrian mile of the Inner New Town, the northern part of Königstraße flows into Albertplatz.
