Walk on the Wilde takes place at Number One Merrion Square, the childhood home of Oscar Wilde. It is where he grew up, and where he lived until he was 22 before he left for Oxford to complete his studies. Participants will watch a slide show of the history of the house and hear the story of the rise and fall of Oscar Wilde. They will discover the largely unknown stories of Oscar's parents Sir William Wilde (an eminent surgeon, historian and statistician) and Lady Jane (a socialite who wrote inflammatory Irish nationalist poetry). I will tell the story of the famous soirees held there during the 1860 and 1870s. Visitors will hear of the scandals and court cases that surrounded Oscar's parents when the future playwright was just ten years old. The house tour and lecture lasts one hour.
I'm a travel writer and journalist with 20 years' experience working for national newspapers in London and Dublin. I'm an expert in Victoriana, and the Anglo-Irish writers of the 19th century, I've studied the life and works of Oscar Wilde for more than 30 years, I've had articles published in the Sunday Times Culture magazine, the Daily Mail, The Sun, The Mirror, The Times of London. I've visited the London hotel Oscar Wilde was arrested in, the Paris hotel he died in, the church he was buried from and his tomb, the area of Normandy he lived in after his release from prison, the Tite Street house he lived in in London and of course, No1 Merrion Square Dublin, where he grew up. I run tours of the Oscar Wilde home.
