Qué vas a hacer

To start, we’ll be spending four hours exploring Jiyugaoka, a local neighborhood just outside central Tokyo. Jiyugaoka is filled with quaint boutique shops and scrumptious French- and Italian-inspired bakeries, which tourists unfortunately often overlook. Over the course of the tour, we will explore some of these small back streets as we make our way to the local shrine that has been in the neighborhood for around 800 years. Afterwards, just a short walk away, you will get to try some Tea and “Wagashi”, which is a traditional Japanese sweet that pairs with the tea of choice, in a casual Japanese tea house. After our relaxing Tea experience, we will be exploring what makes Jiyugaoka unique, which are it’s various European inspired buildings and areas. The next dish on the tour will be an early Hokkaido Ice-cream dessert. A short walk away we will be trying an interesting spin on Menchi Katsu which will be made with the famous “Wagyu” or Japanese beef. We will then get some sushi at a well-known sushi shop to try some of my favorite and more interesting types of nigiri sushi not common outside Japan. For our last food stop, nestled in the compact and lively alleys near the station, we will go to a very local but friendly “Izakaya” or Japanese pub which serves simple yet delectable “Yakitori” or grilled skewers of meat and vegetables which we will enjoy with a drink.
Other things to note
We will be going to a tea house where we will be sitting on the floor for about 30 minutes and will be taking off our shoes, so please bring comfortable shoes and clothing. The food includes dairy, beef, chicken, fish, pork, and vegetables that may not be replaceable at some stops.

I’m Ryan, a 24-year-old business student, and part-time food tour guide. I’ve been living in Tokyo for five wonderful years, and spent two of those years studying the Japanese language full-time. Throughout my stay, I’ve immersed myself in Japanese culture, while working for one of Tokyo’s top food tour companies. I’ve had the pleasure of conducting tours for both intimate groups and large corporate social events, and become acquainted with people from all over the world! Having lived in the Philippines, Malaysia, South Africa and now Japan, I’ve experienced a myriad of international cuisines, but Japan’s unique dishes have fostered a special passion in me. I’m extremely enthusiastic to share my experiences with you, take you to undiscovered locations beyond the usual tourist trail, and introduce you to my favorite Japanese dishes.

Dónde vas a estar

We will be exploring the fascinating neighborhood of Jiyugaoka. We will stop by a variety of places where the locals eat, unique shops, and local landmarks that make Jiyugaoka special. It is also one of the most popular places to live in Tokyo unfortunately missed by tourists coming to Japan.

Ryan’s tour was great!! It was so nice to explore a local neighborhood that we would have never found on our own(it was so cute with minimal tourists, one of my favorites places we visited in Tokyo). The food selections were all delicious and he was able to talk us through the proper way of eating, the culture and history. Would recommend this tour 100%, definitely one of our highlights from the trip!

Ryan was convivial and a great host! He took us to a few great local spots off the beaten path. He had space reserved for us everywhere so the logistics was very easy. Ryan was very engaging and has great content as well - leaned a few cultural peculiarities I would have never learned on another tour. I had so much fun walking the streets and trying some great food while learning about the local area and culture. Highly recommending to give this tour a go if you are in Tokyo!
