I took the Baozi making class with my partner, my mum and my grandmother on a family trip to Xi'an We were picked up from our respective accommodation in a taxi, and met close to a local food market. We spent some time exploring the market with Dongcheng, who were extremely knowledgeable about Chinese food. As a big foodie, it was a real treat to be able to find out more about certain elements of Chinese cuisine from such experts. After wandering around the market, learning a few words of Chinese and trying some delicious spring rolls, we headed back to Chilli Cool HQ for a cup of tea and the class. All four of us are vegetarian, but there was another person in the group who was not, so there were a selection of different veggie and non-veggie fillings for the buns. The process was fascinating and well explained, and I have successfully made baozi since getting home, so I must have learned something! Dongcheng is extremely friendly and chatty and the whole experience was one of my favourite days of our China trip. I'd highly reccommend the class, and thought it was excellent value for money.

I had a blast making dumplings and bao zi with Dongcheng on a recent solo trip I took to China. Dongcheng was prompt in picking me up from my accommodation in Xi'an and was friendly and helpful throughout the entire tour. At the market, I learned about different fruits, vegetables and spices, practiced how to order some food items in Mandarin, tried my hand at creating some pork dumplings, and sampled some tasty street food. After leaving the market, we retired to a more quiet area and enjoyed some tea and snacks acquired from the market. At the school, I learned to make two types of bao zi fillings (pork and veggie), how to mix and roll the dough, and spent time practicing the art of forming the bao zi. It's a lot tougher than it looks, but the instruction was excellent, and I learned three different ways to form the buns. After steaming our works of art, we sat down and devoured the delicious food we had made. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Xi'an, and I know that when I come back, I'll be signing up for another class with him.

Today we took part in the cooking class with Winter and it was one of our most fun days in China so far! They were in regular contact updating us on their whereabouts when picking us up from the meeting point. When there we had chance to introduce ourselves and mingle with the other guests taking part in the class. Once everyone had arrived we made our way to the nearby spice market where Winter explained all the different ingredients commonly found in Chinese and especially Xi'an cuisine. He has a great personality mixing humour in with the educational aspects. He had set each of us ‘missions’ at the market, which I won’t give away, but they made the experience more interesting. We then arrived at the courtyard kitchen where we made The best Steamed Buns so far! As a group we enjoyed dining and chatting with our host afterwards. The whole day felt relaxed and definitely not rushed. As a bonus we received a souvenir and the recipes via email at the end. Professional from start to finish and will have to take Winter up on his offer of KTV on my next visit to Xi'an ;)
