Qué vas a hacer

430 years ago, the young William Shakespeare left his wife and children in Stratford to start a new life in London. Rising from obscurity to superstar, he cut a swath through London society, attracting admirers, lawsuits and the odd begging letter. As a young actor, he lived in rented accommodation and got into trouble for not paying his taxes. By the end of his life, he owned property in fashionable Blackfriars. Starting near St Paul’s Cathedral, we will visit the places he lived and worked, taking in some of the most beautiful sites in London. Along the way we will encounter the unfortunate Jewish doctor who inspired Shakespeare to create Shylock, find the site of London's first theatre, visit Stationers' Hall where the earliest printed copies of Shakespeare's works were registered and view the site where kidnapped boys were forced to perform by unscrupulous playhouse managers.
Other things to note
Wear comfortable clothes. Let me know of any disability issues so I can adjust the route to suit you. Umbrella?

I am a lawyer, historian and official City of London tour guide. Introducing guests to the splendours and secrets of my hometown is my passion. I try to make my tours a mixture of fun and fact (with some of the facts being funny and some of the fun being factual). With more than 35 years experience of hosting visitors to the City and access to sites that are not generally open or known to the public, I give my guests a true insider's perspective. Please contact me to arrange a private tour that will make your visit to London truly memorable. All of my income from guiding is donated to charity

Ian really knows his material. He revealed details about London and Shakespeare that I would but have learned just walking around in my own. I wouldn't have found them doing a Google search because I wouldn't know to make the historical connections that he delivered so expertly.

Ian made the walk tour enjoyable and memorable with his humour and simple language . Ian’s passion for Shakespeare’s London was well reflected in the tour , the trivia and the highlighted picture folder made the tour very knowledgeable and opened up a different side of London. Thank you and Namaste Ian I had a great walk .

Even in very typical London random weather (30 minute storm) Ian was resourceful and kept everyone comfortable and entertained! A highly intelligent gentlemen with a sense of humor to boot!

I joined the tour with my two family members. We are highly impressed by the way that Ian was conducting the tour in such an informative and interactive manner. Believe it or not, the way Ian speaks both attracted and held my young kid's attention, which even caused him to correctly respond to relevant questions during the tour. We also found that Ian is well versed with the history and relics of Shakespeare en route, and that he can vividly explain the story behind each and every scene with the supplements of his well-prepared printed materials, leaflets, etc. Apart from getting some knowledge about Shakespeare, we have been taken to some interesting streets and alleys of London which may be neglected by most tourists. I would certainly recommend this tour to any visitors who would like to explore the treasure of London. Many thanks to Ian!

Have just returned from a wonderful visit to London, with one of the highlights being the Shakespeare tour with Ian. Expectations were high, and Ian did not disappoint. With a deep knowledge of topic coupled with compelling enthusiasm, Ian is a friendly and engaging story-teller who invites interaction with his group. His research into legal documents provides him with unusual insights into the life and work of the Bard. Of particular interest was a visit to the spectacular Guildhall, where we read a roster of victims of trials in the Great Hall and learned from Ian how this piece of history ties in with Shakespeare. Ian's tour is completely enjoyable and gives the feeling of experiencing a rare glimpse of Shakespeare himself. Don't miss it!

This tour is about Shakespeare’s London but it’s so much more. It details so many interesting aspects of history and all with a great sense of humor. We got to enter some special areas that only certain people have access to and it was really fun. Ian had some copies of historical documents to share which were very interesting. I even got to act out a piece from “The Merchant of Venice”, which as an actress is always a pleasure. All in all, this was one of my favorite things I’ve ever done in London (and I’ve been to London dozens of times). I would highly recommend this tour!
