Qué harás

We'll meet at 9 AM at the Bertolt Brecht Café Teatro to visit the far ends of Havana that most tourists will never see. This experience will not include a ride in an elegant convertible like the ones most tourists take in Havana. Instead, you will ride in our 1949 Chevrolet Deluxe named Gertrude, with the original engine she left the Flint, Michigan factory with in 1949. You will discover the rural community just 20 minutes from Old Havana where we, Frank and Anabel, reside with our two wonderful children—who are dual Cuban and United States citizens—and our dogs, cats, and hog. Foreigners don’t usually get to see this part of Havana, but it is the reality of Cuba, where everyone knows their neighbor and time seems to have stopped decades ago. In this area, you will visit small farms that practice sustainable and organic agriculture by necessity, not choice, and where fields are still plowed by oxen. You will meet the rural residents of Havana, whose horse-drawn carts and wagons continue to be their principal mode of transportation in the 21st century.

Anabel

I'm Anabel, a dentist and Havana native. My husband Frank was born and raised in the United States. He has lived in Florida, Louisiana, and New York, and has a bachelor's degree in international relations. He started traveling to Cuba ten years ago, and has been living in Havana with me and our two children for about five years. Our intention is to show guests what life in Havana is like from an American and Cuban point of view. We'll introduce you to our neighbors in the rural area of Boyeros, and you'll leave with a greater understanding of Cubans and life in Cuba.

Dónde estarás

We'll meet in the capital's heavily urbanized Vedado neighborhood and make our way to rural Havana. After a 30-minute drive, you will feel as if you've stepped into another century, where horses still provide much of the transportation, and where the land is worked by hand and the fields are plowed by oxen.
