Qué vas a hacer

The tour begins meeting Johnny, a slave descendant & lifelong resident of the area at the historic Lyon's House site where you tour the grounds, experience the living area of slaves, & listen to rich stories passed down through generations. You gain an understanding of what it was like for families to live on small Southern Farms before the Civil War.

Next drive or walk .6 miles along a paved two-lane road to the start of an old stagecoach road, now a trail. Continue the trail for .25 miles as you get an understanding of Flat Rock. Then you turn a corner and enter a wooded area dotted with gravestones. This is the Flat Rock Historic Cemetery with at least 202 interred individuals, many simple unidentified gravestones. This area has ticks in summer, you do not have to visit the cemetery but focus primarily on the house.

The Cemetery’s oral tradition roots its origins as a Native American burial ground with evidence of Native and AA interaction. Some interred were born slaves & freed after the Civil War.

After visiting the cemetery, you can continue back to the Lyon’s Farm where you can enjoy the scenic views of Panola Mtn that only a local would know or stroll along the PATH.

I am Johnny, the tour guide at the Flat Rock Archives located in the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area. I had the vision to create an archive that would preserve African American history in DeKalb County since the 1980s. I have been recognized through numerous awards where I specialize in the preservation of rural GA African American history. Many stories have been passed down through my family for generations that discuss the days of slavery through Jim Crow, the founding of the KKK on the top of Stone Mountain, to tenant farming and working in the local granite quarries.

Johnny was a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable and professional. Well worth the small fee. My 19 year old daughter who didn't want to go ended up really enjoying it. Go, you won't regret it.

An incredible glimpse into a unique community and rich history. One of the most worthwhile tours I have taken. Full of personal insights about life before and after slavery in a small community.

I have to admit that I felt a little reluctant at 1st because of the low price. Once Johnny started explaining the history of the 1st property (yes, he takes you to a couple of properties) we knew this experience was well under priced. Johnny mentioned that he had done over 1,000 of the guided tours and it was very evident. Thanks for a wonderful experience Johnny!

A walk through the lives of blacks of Flat Rock from the time of slavery through to today. We saw the plantation house, the slave quarters, the lay of the land from one plantation to the next, the location of the slave church - a Tabernacle, and the evolution of that church over the years, how the church and a few families held the black community together while so many others moved to the North, the first home built by a black man after slavery ended, how that one man changed the whole area, how blacks were targeted by hatred and violence that sought to run them out of town, and how they survived and thrived in spite of it all. It was amazing. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

This was a wonderful and enriching experience. The tour provided us with a chance to hear first-hand stories of Johnny’s family and the rich history of the community. Often these stories are lost in time and we feel blessed to have had the privilege to hear them.
