Mura Collective was started in 1998, as a response to a deeply felt personal need and intent to establish workspaces for marginalized ( special needs)
persons. A chance meeting with the late Mr. Toofan Rafai, the grand old dad of natural dyes got the promoters hooked to Natural dyes, especially Indigo. A subsequent chance “stumbling upon” the Kyoto Shibori museum catalog, completed the magic! Two decades later, the magic continues……
Pioneers in bringing Shibori into mainstream textiles, Mura is a known brand in the handcrafted textile industry and has received the UNESCO Seal of Excellence 4 times, for the high quality of design and workmanship of its products. It continues to receive not just groups of students from NID,
NIFT, Pearl Academy, etc as visitors, but also international tourists from across the globe, who just ‘hear’ of us and get in touch!
A typical tour of Mura would include witnessing the various stages of the Shibori process live, followed by the captivating process of Indigo dyeing. A hands-on creative process for each individual participant will be included, depending on the nature of the group, and the time duration of the tour.

This experience is co-hosted by Kusum Tiwari and IHWF. Kusum is a Management graduate with an IT background. An unusual personal event ( the birth of her special needs daughter) changed the course of her life
forever. She set up Mura along with her sister with the intent of creating a workspace for her daughter, when she grew up, as well as for other special needs persons like her. She has given talks to a host of audiences…both local and international….students, tourists interested in the arts and
crafts, groups of bloggers and ex-pats, Shibori craftspersons and Indigo dyers from Japan.
