Qué vas a hacer

Our exploration of the Old Town Plaza will begin with coffee, tea and biscochitos on the balcony of our home, looking out over the original town square and historic San Felipe Church. We will overlook history as well, and gaze back from the Tewa people on who’s land Old Town was built, to life on the plaza during the Spanish, Mexican and American colonial periods.

Next we will undertake a walking tour of the plaza with a focus on the old adobe architecture and the stories associated with the buildings and smaller placitas that make up Old Town, using historical photos and visuals to support the information. This stroll will include secrets and lore unknown even to most Albuquerque residents, interaction with some of the "old timers" that live and work here, and pointers what to see and do and where to eat, tailored to the needs and interests of each group. Old Town is a valuable community resource and there are frequent impromptu happenings- quinceaneras, vintage car parades, etc. The tour will embrace these spontaneous events as they occur making the visit to Old Town even more vibrant and personal.

Finally, at the end of the tour experience, participants have the option of being served lunch at La Placita Dining Room in the Manuel Armijo House, one of the oldest structures on the Plaza, built in 1706.

I am a retired educator and full time history buff with deep love and respect for Albuquerque's Old Town Plaza where I make my home. Gathering information from traditional sources and from the stories and personal narratives of many of the people whose families have called Old Town home for centuries, I endeavor to guide guests on a trip through time, from the present to the past and back again.

This was a totally delightful tour. Meeting Greg and his warm, personable manner made us feel as if we were wrapped in fuzzy blankets, sitting by the fireplace listening to fascinating stories about Albequerque history. Greg allowed us to leave our one dimensional view of the Old Town and transform it into living history, complete with colorful characters, battles, architecture, brothels and a nun hiding Billy the Kid. What's not to like? Our walk about town was perfect, not to mention the tea and cookies! What's next, Greg? We're ready for more!

This was an excellent tour and we learned much about the history of ABQ and the town square in particular. Greg lives in Old Town, is a retired teacher with a relaxed and conversational style. His tour is structured with stops around the square and he has key learning points to convey but is entirely open to questions along the way. This tour is a great value as Greg clearly does this out of love for and service to his community. Highly recommend!

Greg was excellent from our first contact; very willing to adapt the experience to suit our mobility limitations and our special interests. We loved that he answered all of our questions across a wide range of topics and we really appreciated the love and respect he clearly has for New Mexico's people and her past. The historic town square setting is a perfect setting for this experience. Thank you from 2 Canadians who love to learn!
