Qué vas a hacer

Sendai City might feel like a modern city, but if you wander a little further off the beaten-path you may find yourself down the atmospheric, post-war retro alleyways of ‘Bunka Yokocho’ and ‘Iroha Yokocho’. The alleys are lined with tiny hole-in-the-wall bars serving up local delicacies and crowd favourites like freshly grilled yakitori, gyoza, ramen, fresh seafood and (of course) a huge variety of local sake! Some of the bars only sit 8-10 people and have limited English menus, so it can be a little intimidating to enter alone. Not to worry - on this tour, you’ll be joined by a bilingual local to show you the ropes! After a brief walking tour of the alleys to learn about the local history and check-out what's on offer, you will be guided to three ‘izakaya’ (Japanese style bars/pubs) where you will enjoy a drink and a local dish at each. Each izakaya has its own vibe and offers fresh seasonal dishes and tastes unique to Sendai, a city blessed with both incredible seafood and abundant farmland. There are plenty of options on tap but we recommend trying some of the tasty local sake! Your guide will teach you all the lingo and tips you need to know to enjoy a night of eating and drinking like a true Japanese local. Escape the tourist crowds and make some new friends as you sit shoulder-to-shoulder with the regulars!
Other things to note
Please note that some of the bars visited are quite small, so you may be sitting in close proximity to other customers. You may encounter food/drink that you will try for the first time, so please let your guide know if you have any allergies or other dietary requirements where necessary.

I'm a Iocal guide and foodie expert, born and raised in Sendai City.
Between back-packing as a student and working in tourism, I’ve traveled overseas over 30 times. Everywhere I go, I always find the best experiences are with a local to help you discover the best (and tastiest) local secrets that you won't find in guidebooks. I want more international visitors to discover the 'real' Sendai City, so I’ve produced some bilingual walking tours and local experiences of my own! I'm a huge foodie and, working together with 'Slow Food International', my experiences have a focus on sustainability and protecting the flavours and food culture unique to the Sendai area.
As well as being a qualified tour guide and coordinator, I am also studying to become a 'sake sommelier'! Leave it to me to help you find your favourite local drop!
