Qué vas a hacer
We will head straight into my gardens. After a tour, you can choose which specific plants or methods interest you most. Here are a few things I try to do: * Love and encourage 'my' insects and other living creatures: I use no pesticides, and I have worm buckets (I love my worms!). * Use water wisely: During the heat, I harvest almost 100 gallons of beautiful water a day from the A/C runoff. No city water needed! * Create water ecosystems Types of plants: bougainvilleas, bananas, beach morning glory, plumeria, water lilies, floating and submerged pond plants, palms. Here are some of the specific skills we can work on (depending on your interests): * propagating from pups, cuttings, seeds * grooming to trigger blooms (bougainvillea) * tending so they bear fruit (bananas) * training vines to climb * capturing air conditioner condensate water for your garden * using fish tub-ponds to make beautiful fertilizer water * making a healthy fish ecosystem in a half-barrel * using solar power to improve the garden * making container garden 'corrals' We will have plenty of cold refreshments and snacks we can enjoy in my private courtyard garden while we work. We also have very nice A/C indoors, if we need a respite to cool down. The garden space and indoors are fully accessible. We have ADA restrooms and showers, doors, ramps and gates. Bring those wheels, we have space for you!
Every day I wake up and think about what I am going to do in one of my gardens, or about a new garden I will create. I gardened for myself and others for several decades 'up North', as well as in southern California, and now have developed a new set of gardening skills and tricks to take advantage of the remarkable (and daunting) growing conditions in beachside Florida. Heat... salt... hurricanes... we've got them! But we also have the plants who love them and thrive. For me, gardening is like a green version of a human life: There are ways to survive, and bloom, in even the worst conditions. Every bloom and new leaf makes me happy. Come see the joy (and sweat!) of gardening in the salty, warm land of sun, space and sea, six blocks from the Atlantic ocean! p.s. We will also hear cruise ship horns and the calls of peacocks. Urban jungle!
Cold drinks to help us manage the outdoor heat.
I can provide sun hats, work gloves and sunscreen. I will have all necessary garden materials, including soils, pots,…
Dónde vas a estar
We will work in gardens I have created around our vintage building in Cape Canaveral, including a 126-foot-long wall garden, a private shade garden, a hidden courtyard garden, a garden workbench under a bamboo screen, a roadside container garden, a banana and bamboo garden, and water lily + fish barrels throughout the property. It's my secret world!
